The MOSE, Electromechanical Experimental Module, is aimed at regulating tidal flows at the port inlets of Chioggia, Malamocco and Venice Lido. This effect was achieved through a barrier of mobile gates hinged on the bottom which will protect the lagoon and its inhabitants in the event of an expected storm surge.

The system is sized to support a difference in height between the sea and the lagoon of up to 2 metres, which means that it is effective even in the event of significant increases in average sea level.
